Upon being accepted, each incoming freshman is administered a separate reading, writing, and math assessment. We recognize that incoming students have had diverse learning experiences prior to coming to Monty Tech, and these assessments allow us to measure each student’s academic preparedness based on specific standards and, in turn, determine each student’s academic placement for English, math, science, and social studies classes. Your student's results will be mailed home with the following information.
Reading Scores: The overall scorer reading score is the overall score based upon the vocabulary and comprehension subscores. You will also be able to view your student’s overall grade equivalency (GE) based upon his/her reading level. Monty Tech’s placement process begins with the Reading Assessment Criteria and placement into CP4, Honors, or CP2 levels for English, Biology, and US History classes.
Writing Scores: The writing assessment is used as a secondary method of reviewing student ability for English, Biology, and US History classes. Similar to the MCAS, scores ranged from 0-4. If students scored in the CP2 level, students may qualify for additional support in a course entitled, Writing Lab. These courses are highly recommended in preparation for the MCAS.
Math: The math assessment included general math and Algebra skills. Scores range from 0-40. Placement is determined for Algebra 2 (honors), Algebra I (CP4), and Algebra IA (CP2). If students scored in the CP2 level, students may qualify for additional support in a course entitled, Math Lab. These courses are highly recommended in preparation for the MCAS.
Scheduling / Placement: Your student’s schedule will be mailed home. Courses are selected based upon the results of placement testing, sending school recommendations, selections made during the application process, and transition TEAM meeting decisions (IEP/504). It is vital that your student is placed in the appropriate level class for his/her ability. In order for us to make the best placement decision for your student, we conduct a review of recommendations from your sending school and student performance to be sure that your student’s placement matches his/her needs.
